Surgical Orthodontics
Surgical orthodontics is a specialized treatment where Dr. Mullen works with an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon to correct severe jaw irregularities that cannot be fixed with braces or aligners alone. This surgery is called orthognathic surgery and can realign the jaws and improve the way the teeth fit together. This treatment is typically recommended for adults or older teens who have completed their jaw growth.
Surgical orthodontics is usually part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes braces or clear aligners both before and after surgery to help align the teeth with the new jaw position. The surgical phase involves repositioning one or both jaws to improve bite function and facial proportions.
Recovery time varies and will be recommended by the oral and maxillofacial surgeon, but most patients can return to school or work after two weeks, with full healing over the course of several months. This type of treatment is used to address complex problems such as:
Severe overbite or underbite
Open bite that cannot be corrected with orthodontics alone
Severe crossbite with jaw misalignment
Jaw size or position discrepancies
Facial asymmetry or imbalance
Speech difficulties or breathing issues related to jaw structure
Surgical orthodontics not only improves how the teeth bite and function – it often enhances facial harmony, boosts confidence, and supports long-term oral health. Though the process is more involved than traditional orthodontics, the results can be life-changing.
